Blue budgerigar looking toward a safe handheld target during voluntary training

Can You Teach Your Budgie a Simple Target Game?

A simple target game gives a confident budgie something interesting to learn: moving voluntarily toward a harmless object for a small reward.

Choose a safe target

Use a clean, smooth bird-safe target, such as a simple handheld stick with no sharp edges, loose coatings or small parts. Keep sessions calm.

Reward curiosity first

Present the target nearby, without poking or chasing the bird. Reward a glance or voluntary approach with a tiny species-appropriate favorite treat.

Build toward a gentle touch

When your budgie is comfortable, reward touching the target with the beak. Practise in brief sessions and stop if your bird backs away or looks stressed.

Try this: Never make a bird hungry to train, force it toward the target or allow chewing on unsafe materials. For fearful birds, seek qualified avian guidance.
