What Is Your Cockatiel's Crest Telling You?
Your cockatiel's crest is expressive, but it isn't a mood meter with one fixed meaning. Look at the crest together with posture, sounds and the situation.
Straight up can mean alert
A tall crest may signal curiosity or surprise. Check whether the bird is relaxed and exploring or startled by a noise.
Flattened can mean discomfort
Crest feathers held tightly back, especially with hissing or a tense posture, can be a warning to give space.
Relaxed looks softer
A gently angled crest and easy body posture may accompany a comfortable bird, but each cockatiel has its own habits.
Try this: Watch how the crest changes when your bird notices a favorite toy, hears a sound or settles for rest. Never force handling to test a reaction.
