Why Is Your Cat Obsessed With Cardboard Boxes?

Bought a cozy cat bed, but your cat prefers the delivery box? An enclosed hiding spot can help cats feel sheltered and give them a place to observe without being exposed.

A box creates a retreat

Many cats enjoy having somewhere to hide or rest. Studies in shelter settings have found that access to hiding boxes can help reduce behavioral signs of stress.

Give the box a safe setup

Put a clean, stable box on the floor with an easy entrance. Remove staples, packing tape, plastic, strings and anything your cat could swallow.

Let your cat decide

Place the box in a quiet corner and wait. Never push your cat inside; some cats prefer an open bed or a higher resting place.

Try this: Try two differently sized boxes and notice which your cat explores. Curiosity is the goal—not making them stay inside.
